A traditional Chinese martial art originating from the Shaolin Temple some 350 years ago. After the burning of the Shaolin temple in the 1640's, the founder, a Shaolin monk named Wong Long, took refuge in the Laoshan temple in Shandong province near his birthplace. It was there that he refined the system by putting together the best techniques of 17 Shaolin systems and the characteristics of the praying mantis making it comprised of a total of 18 different systems. The style also incorporated the footwork of the monkey. Praying Mantis Kung Fu encompasses hard & soft theories, striking, kicking, trapping, locking, throwing and ground techniques.

All together, with the swift, agile steps of the monkey, the lightning hands of the praying mantis, and the intricate techniques make this style a complex and complete martial arts system. Because of this, the Monks called the Praying Mantis style, "The Treasure that guards the mountain."

There are many styles of Praying Mantis Kung Fu today; one of the oldest is the Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu System. This system utilizes many techniques and forms for its training. It is considered one of the more rigid of the styles of Praying Mantis. Seven Star Mantis has several variations depending on region.
